How the Surveys Work

The What Works in School Online Surveys are each based on the 11 factors associated with the largest student achievement gains as reported in research conducted over the past 35 years.

The Staff Survey allows teachers and administrators to give their perceptions about the performance of their school or district.

The Parent/Guardian/Community Survey allows those most closely involved in the raising of children to tell their schools how they're doing.

Responses to the questions are provided in reports that pinpoint the most likely areas that you will need to address to increase student achievement in your school or district. Individual responses are anonymous; results are reported after all participants have completed the survey.

Staff Survey
This survey features 68 items and asks participants to answer three questions for each item using a scale from 1 to 4:

  • To what extent do we engage in this behavior or address this issue?
  • How much will a change in our current practices on this item increase the academic achievement of our students?
  • How much effort will it take to significantly change our current practices regarding this issue?

We estimate the survey will take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete.

Parent/Guardian/Community Survey
This survey, which is available in English and Spanish, features 41 statements and asks participants to decide how clearly each statement reflects their perceptions about the performance of their children's schools. The responses are the same for each statement:

  • I don't have enough information to respond to this statement
  • Never
  • Sometimes
  • Usually
  • Always

We estimate the parent/community/guardian survey will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.
