Frequently Asked Questions

Why are these surveys worth taking?
To plan for school improvement, you first have to know what is and isn't working. Student test data is one piece of information to analyze. But it's also necessary to understand what the professionals in your school or district--as well as the parents, guardians, and community members--believe to be important areas for improvement. Results of these surveys will provide a powerful consensus view of your school or district. If perception is reality, then this survey will be a powerful tool for analysis that leads to positive results in student achievement.

How is this different from other survey instruments?
The What Works in Schools Online Surveys have done the work for you--analyzing 35 years of research and creating a tool based on the most important factors influencing student achievement. No other survey instrument is based on a meta-analysis of more than 500 reports involving more than 9,000 schools.

How can I use the results?
The survey will identify your school or district's weaknesses, focus on those problems that will respond most readily to intervention, and highlight areas of concern that, when addressed, are most likely to increase student performance. The survey will recommend tools (from a variety of sources) to address your specific areas of need. You will determine how you wish to see the data reported, and you can determine how you will share the data within your school or district.

With the results, leaders can plan a customized improvement program. The reports will show the areas critical to helping your organization decide where to focus its staff time, resources, policy investment, and professional development.

How will parents, guardians, or community members take the survey if they don't speak English?
Currently, the parent/guardian/community component of the survey is also available in Spanish. We do plan to offer the survey in additional languages in the future, based on school and district needs.
